Hamptons Virtual Art Fair 2020: Darcy Gerbarg, Invited 3D VR Painter
Abstract expressionist Darcy Gerbarg is the individual featured digital painter at this year's annual Hamptons Art Fair.
Darcy Gerbarg is an abstract expressionist painter who pioneered the use of computers in her painting process. Beginning in 1979, she continues to be a visiting artist at groundbreaking computer graphics and animation research facilities. Using digital technology and traditional art techniques, Gerbarg creates art in both the Virtual and Real Worlds, with the latest Mixed Reality image creation tools.
Gerbarg describes her current body of work, the Inside and Outside Pictures, as digital from end to end. They are first envisioned and painted in colored light, by Gerbarg in a Virtual World. With 3DVR goggles on and controllers in hand, inspired by both nature and the built environment, Gerbarg makes expansive, expressionistic gestures, in explosions of light and color. She surrounds herself with brush strokes of colored light in a three-dimensional Virtual World. Throughout the painting of these 3D light paintings, Gerbarg takes snapshots in, around and through them, from multiple angels and perspectives. She then digitally develops these crops into her unique images. The Artist prints her images herself.
The Inside and Outside Pictures combine abstract painting and realism. The Inside and Outside Pictures include pieces of Gerbarg's virtual reality light paintings in real landscapes and interiors. By placing her 3DVR ligh1 sculptures in real environments Gerbarg creates paintings that are reminiscent of traditional still life and landscape painting, with a new, updated, contemporary approach.
